SFJAZZ holds over 2,000 recordings of jazz, world, and folk artists, dating back to when the organization was called Jazz in the City (1983-1989), San Francisco Jazz Festival (1991-1999), and its first decade as SFJAZZ (2000-2012), before the construction of the free-standing SFJAZZ Center. The recordings include live concerts, panel discussions, interviews, and other unique one-time events that chronicle these earlier years of our organizational history.
This is the first time the audio-videotapes from the SFJAZZ Historical Archive can be accessed by the public. Through our ongoing digitization efforts, we hope that the myriad experiences of music with SFJAZZ will reach new audiences across generations and traditions.
The archive features talks and music by Joe Henderson, Don Cherry, Wayne Shorter, Anthony Braxton, Tony Williams, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Orrin Keepnews, Herbie Hancock, Cecil Taylor, David Murray, Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden, Dorothy Donegan, John Santos, Charles Lloyd, Max Roach, Angela Davis, Wadada Leo Smith, and many more.

The Historical Archive project was made possible through the help of California Revealed (CA-R) and CLIR (Council on Library and Information Resources). Through our partnership with CA-R and their digitization and preservation assistance program, we digitized the earliest recordings from the archive that are now discoverable on the Internet Archive and the CA-R Repository. In 2022, we were awarded a Recordings at Risk grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), made possible by funding from the Mellon Foundation. Through this grant, we digitized significantly more audio-videotapes to add to the Internet Archive collection. As a result, the SFJAZZ Historical Archive Collection on the Internet Archive holds the most comprehensive collection of our recordings.

WATCHThe SFJAZZ Historical Archive is an incredible resource that gives access to experience some of the creators of jazz music and to hear the evolution of 'jazz in the city' of San Francisco. The blessing to hear McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Wayne Shorter and Ornette Coleman and the privilege to share the stage with some of my heroes was an immeasurable gift.
