During the month of July, SFJAZZ and Stanford Live will co-present two exciting concerts as a part of the Stanford Live Arts Festival. The line-up includes the legendary Count Basie Orchestra with multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Gunhild Carling at Bing Concert Hall, and a massive outdoor blues concert at Frost Amphitheater featuring Taj Mahal Quintet, and a duo performance featuring Elvin Bishop and Charlie Musselwhite.

In the history of jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for over 30 years after his passing. Pianist and bandleader William James “Count” Basie was and still is an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of Jazz. The Count Basie Orchestra, today directed by Scotty Barnhart, has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, won 18 Grammy Awards, performed for Kings, Queens, and other world Royalty, appeared in several movies, television shows, at every major jazz festival and major concert hall in the world.
Gunhild Carling is a highly-acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, singer, dancer, and songwriter with over 50 million views on Youtube. She plays more than 10 instruments, including trumpet, trombone, bag pipes, piano, harp, harmonica, and more.

For more than 40 years, Mahal, internationally renowned bassist Bill Rich, and revered percussionist Kester Smith have taken blues on a joyride through reggae, funk, jazz, cajun, and more, leaving a trail of swinging hips and raised palms in their wake. In 2019, guitarist and lap steel master Bobby Ingano joined the group, and the trio became the Taj Mahal Quartet. Opening the show will be a special duo performance featuring two living icons of the blues, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Elvin Bishop and Blues Hall of Famer Charlie Musselwhite.
