Original show description below.
Saxophone great Joshua Redman presents the SFJAZZ debut of his current working group featuring vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa, pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo for this return to the Miner stage, performing a selection of stimulating music including material from his 2023 Blue Note album Where Are We.
The New Orleans-based Cavassa, co-winner of the 2021 International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition, fell in love with jazz while attending San Francisco State University. Since her Bay Area days she’s blossomed as a performer, bandleader, and composer, earning critical raves for her eponymous 2020 Jamison Ross-produced debut album. She made her first recording with Redman on Where Are We, the saxophonist’s 2023 Blue Note Records debut and a loose “concept” recording devoted to inventive mashups of compositions dedicated to specific cities and areas within the U.S.
Bringing these songs to life for these performances is a remarkable band of young phenoms.
Paul Cornish is a giant in the making. A finalist in the 2023 American Pianists Awards and the Herbie Hancock International Jazz Piano Competition, he recently signed to Blue Note and has recorded and performed with Mark Guiliana, Louis Cole, Terrace Martin, and HAIM.
Winnipeg-born bassist Philip Norris is an in-demand instrumentalist in New York, working widely with Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Veronica Swift, and Emmet Cohen.
Nazir Ebo continues the tradition of master drummers who hail from Philadelphia, lending his rhythmic power and nimble acuity to performances with Logan Richardson, Soweto Kinch, and Dezron Douglas.
Saxophonist Joshua Redman premieres his new quartet performing music from his new album Where Are We with vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.
