Original show description below.
Founded in 2004, the SFJAZZ Collective is our all-star resident ensemble and composer’s workshop that represents what’s happening now in jazz.
The band has expanded beyond its orignal mission to embrace other influences outside of jazz history, and this year, the Collective embarks on the most audacious project in their history.
For the 2024-25 Season, the septet will collaborate with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco to compose new material and arrange familiar songs inspired by artwork from the museums’ extensive collections.
Starting with a concept employed by Romantic era Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in his 1874 piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition and updating it for the 21st century, the Collective will link their compositions and arrangements thematically, and in performance, collaborate with a video designer to fully utilize Miner Auditorium’s immersive media system to take the audience through a visually stunning virtual tour of the artworks.
Please join us for this scintillating journey of sight and sound!
